Easy steps to clean your kitchen cabinets

Kitchens aren’t only a place to quickly cook your favourite meal these days. The modern kitchen is designed to be a place where we can socialise, have a drink and relax, usually while something is cooking.

There are some parts of the kitchen that are obvious places to clean, such as stovetops and floors. However, just below and above the waistline are cupboards that are likely collecting dust, grime and grease. Often overlooked, here is a couple of tips for giving your kitchen cupboards back their original shine.

  • Cleaning cloths
  • An old toothbrush, just in case of hard to reach dirt
  • Everyday dish soap
  • Multi-purpose cleaner or cleaner with orange oil
  • Vacuum cleaner (optional)

The majority of cabinet materials, including plastic, laminate, metal, wood and vinyl cabinets can be easily cleaned with a solution of common liquid dish soap and warm water. Mix the solution together in a small bowl or bucket, and this should be enough to remove the majority of food smudges, dust and grease build up.

Common dish soap is an all around cleaning saviour. Once the cabinet has been cleaned with the solution, a wipe down with a dry towel or cloth is all that is needed. Make sure to dry the cabinets as much as possible, particularly if made from wood to prevent discolouration.

While you’re cleaning the outside, don’t forget the sides and under the doors. There are many hidden spots where dirt and grime can hide.

There are also many multi-purpose sprays that are fine to use, however it’s a good idea to test them on a small area of the cabinet, just to make sure that they will not harm the finish.

Completely empty the inside of the cupboards, remembering to remove any mats or lining to fully access the shelving. The lining and mats will also need to be cleaned, as they are likely also dirty.

If there is a lot of residue and crumbs, it may be a good idea to vacuum the inside with the use of a vacuum cleaner with attachment, or a dustbuster if there is one handy.

Once the crumbs and particles are gone, wash the shelving and all sides of the cupboard with a mild detergent/soap and warm water.

Take another damp cloth and wipe off the solution as much as you can. Finally, take a dry towel or cloth to wipe dry all moisture that is left.

Take a paper towel to finally wipe away the last remainders of liquid. It is important to ensure that the cupboards are completely dry, as mould and mildew may form if the cupboards are closed while still damp

If you’re going to replace the contents of your cupboard, you may as well make sure they are clean also. Wipe down all of your bottles and cans with warm water and a cloth, using soap if they are a little saucy.

Place the items back in the cupboard after drying, leaving the cupboard open for around one to two hours to ensure air flows through to completely dry them.
